Making a Difference in Sewanee by Dixon Myers, Associate Director, Office of Civic Engagement

October 4, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm CDT

For more than two decades, Dixon Myers has coordinated community outreach activities at the University of the South. Under his guidance, Sewanee’s students have engaged in an enormous range of service projects around the world, including assisting with agricultural re-forestation and dental and medical relief in Haiti, serving food to thousands of needy individuals in collaboration with Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen in New York, and contributing to post-Katrina reconstruction and relief efforts in New Orleans.

In 1993, Dixon co-founded Housing Sewanee Inc., a volunteer-driven housing nonprofit modeled after Habitat for Humanity. To date, Housing Sewanee has built 17 homes for low-income clients in the Greater Sewanee area. In 2015, Dixon received the Bonner Foundation’s B-Loved Community Award, in recognition of his passion for the Foundation’s core values: civic engagement, community building, diversity, international perspective, social justice, and spiritual exploration.

Dixon will speak about the power and potential of volunteerism in Sewanee, including the difference between community service and community engagement.
