New Date for Community Work Date
Dear Sewanee Community –
In today’s Messenger you will see an article announcing the opening of the new playground at Elliott Park. The installation of the equipment has been moved due to weather delays.
The new date for the work day is Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
The opening celebration will start at 3 p.m., with the Sewanee band, The Hill Brothers featuring Paul Schutz, Tom Adamson, and Chris Crigger. The Shenanigans Food Truck has been reserved and all are invited to bring a blanket and/or a picnic to enjoy the opening festivities and ribbon cutting.
Under the organizational umbrella of the Sewanee Civic Association, this community with the help from several foundations raised more than $57,000 to purchase and install a brand new playground at Elliott Park. Additionally, the University of the South partnered with the SCA to create an amazing space in which to locate the equipment, professionally built by Gametime. If you have not been by recently, attached is the work in progress – the beautiful stone wall and the entire site prep has been provided by the University. The location is adjacent to the Sewanee Book and Supply Store on University Avenue. You should stop by and take a look!
But first! Before the park can officially open and the children allowed to swarm the playground, the required fiber mulch must be spread. Starting at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 21, there will be a community volunteer day to build up the safety base that is required. A minimum of 50 volunteers, children welcome, 10 wheelbarrows and countless rakes, pitchforks, and shovels are needed to bring the final stage of installation to fruition. Snacks and beverages will be provided between 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for all volunteers. Please consider signing up for this amazing opportunity – we are community strong and we need YOU!
